Toddler throwing huge tantrum?

My almost 3 year old has been throwing tantrums if he doesn't get his way. For example, he wants to watch Barney or Thomas and my God, if we say no, he screams and yells forever! We almost cave in, but this time we didn't. Anyway, is this normal for a kid his age? When will it get better?
